Lakers steal Raptors 905 standout who may have helped shooting
By Mike Luciano
Not only are the Toronto Raptors struggling to find any sort of consistency at the NBA level this season, but the G League season hasn’t started off super smoothly. Raptors 905 are far from the developmental powerhouse they have been in recent seasons.
With the waive of Justin Champagnie and a very slow start to Eric Khoury’s first season in charge of the franchise’s developmental wing, things haven’t been going great in Mississauga. This is a sharp changeup from the last few years, when the 905 ranked among the best in the league consistently.
This start is a bit surprising, considering that the roster is full of players that have some NBA experience. Sterling Brown figured to be one of those veterans who would make this 905 team very scary, but it appears as though he’s played well enough to attract the interest of some NBA franchises.
The Los Angeles Lakers signed Brown to a 10-day contract, looking to get some extra depth and perimeter play. The Raptors will be sad to see him go, as he could have been a prime candidate for their own 10-day deal as they attempt to fill the void left by the Champagnie move.
The Toronto Raptors lost G League player Sterling Brown.
Brown spent the first three seasons of his career with the Milwaukee Bucks, averaging 5.2 points per game while making 35% of his 3-pointers as a backup shooting guard. For a second-round pick, Brown had some pretty impressive games with the Bucks.
Brown truly broke out after moving to Houston, where he averaged 8.2 points per game and made 42% of his triples. Another trade sent him to Dallas, where he struggled to stay in the rotation and was not retained for the 2022-23 season. Brown tried to rehabilitate his value in the G League.
Brown has averaged 11.3 points per game, but he is making 38% of his 3-point attempts. After Reggie Perry earned himself an NBA stint with the Trail Blazers following some impressive stints in Mississauga, Brown might be able to latch on with the Lakers.
The Raptors could have used a player like Brown who could come off the bench and make an impact as a shooter, but the Lakers seem to have beat Toronto to the post. While Toronto would love to have him back, it would be nice to see Brown latch on with an NBA team long-term.
