3 Bold predictions for the Toronto Raptors’ 2023 offseason
By Nolan Fluke
1. The Raptors will add an All-Star
Pascal Siakam is an All-NBA talent and a serious All-Star candidate unless his play takes a serious dive. However, he can’t do it alone. Either the Raptors will sign an All-star free agent, or an OG Anunoby trade is able to bring a fringe All-Star talent to supplement him if they choose to buy.
There are a few All-star players available this free agency. Nikola Vucevic and, most recently, Chris Paul, are available on the market. Toronto is not amazing at signing free agents and probably will not be able to sign one of these names, but they should still try. However, some lower-level fringe All-Stars, like Brook Lopez or D’Angelo Russell, could fit the bill.
Can the Toronto Raptors support Pascal Siakam?
The second possibility is OG Anunoby being traded to bring in an All-Star player. More assets would need to be included, which is tough, as Masai Ujiri used most to obtain Jakob Poeltl at the deadline last season. Due to their asset restraints, this prediction is as bold as it gets. This may be a seemingly impossible trade scenario, but in the NBA, anything is possible.
Getting Siakam another star is a priority if they want to run it back. Fred VanVleet could not sustain his All-Star momentum, and the Raptors’ play dipped as a result. If the Raptors could get another star in their starting lineup, Toronto may be facing another 45+ win season.
