Cavaliers could fire back with LeBron James reunion to counter the Raptors–Kawhi buzz

We got ourselves another NBA offseason bombshell on what could gear up to be quite the action-packed Tuesday.

ESPN's Shams Charania would drop the breaking news in an X post earlier this afternoon, that LeBron James will continue his NBA career for the 2026-27 season. However, the bombshell in question is that James reportedly informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he intends to play somewhere else, marking the end of an eight-season stint that featured a 2019-20 title triumph.

One such rumored destination for the 41-year-old great is the Golden State Warriors. It would definitely be a bit of an odd sight to see LeBron James in Dubs' threads, given their rich history against one another, but it could be Golden State's final chance to build on the final Steph Curry years and other remnants of that era (figuring out a new deal for Draymond Green, the Jimmy Butler situation, and possible Anthony Davis talks).

However, the Cleveland Cavaliers are also among the top contenders in the LeBron James sweepstakes. A second reunion between LeBron and the Cavs has been discussed for quite some time now, with this current Cleveland core possibly looking back to their franchise superstar to narrow the gaps between Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen.

Cavs could bring back LeBron James in their own feel-good reunion as Raptors/Kawhi Leonard talks ramp up

The Cavs' eventual playoff collapse this past year may have only strengthened their case that LeBron could be who they're looking for to complete the puzzle. Of course, James had two different stints in Cleveland, beginning his career there from 2003 to 2010, before famously taking his talents to South Beach. He would return in 2014 and remain there until 2018 — a reunion that culminated in an 2015-16 championship win off an iconic 3–1 series comeback.

Now, it could be time for a third LeBron remarriage in Cleveland. Shams Charania would provide further context on the situation in a recent SportsCenter segment, indicating that he was told "this is a happiness-led decision for LeBron James ... Whereever he lands in free agency, it will not be driven by money."

You certainly have to think coming back home would be a feel-good moment and likely the storybook ending to what is arguably the greatest career in NBA history. A final countdown tour, if you will, or to some, maybe even a revenge tour.

And speaking of feel-good reunions and storybook endings, on the Raptors' side of offseason hoopla, they have also been reportedly working on bringing back their former golden goose in Kawhi Leonard. This storyline has largely kept the Raptors fanbase on its toes, awaiting to see the deal be made official as reports have poured in left and right that confirmation is imminent.

Yesterday, I pointed out how Toronto could be looking at the wide open East race behind the New York Knicks and are pushing to get one step close in that mix by swinging for this Kawhi reunion. The team wouldn't exactly be instant contenders after the deal, with many other lingering roster issues still standing, but many would probably still consider the Raptors to be firmly in that competitive race.

Which in turn could be the call to action for other driven East teams to make a similar splash, and perhaps nothing is as close to such situation than LeBron coming back to Cleveland. It would definitely give them a matchable foil to Kawhi if the Raps and Cavs meet again next year in the playoffs.

We'll see if the Cleveland Cavaliers can get a deal done in the coming days or even hours.
