I’m right there with all of you who have been patiently (and often times, anxiously) waiting for this Kawhi Leonard trade saga to finally come to an end. We kicked off the summer with a hot bombshell: the Raptors and Clippers had agreed to terms on a trade sending Kawhi back to T-Dot. Yet, the entire summer went by without the deal ever reaching official or final approval.
Of course, that was because the NBA was thrust in an investigation into the reported salary cap circumvention accusations. They just recently wrapped up that inquiry, resulting in a set of penalties that include key front-office suspensions and the confiscation of significant first-round draft capital.
As harsh as these consequences are for the Clippers organization, nervous Raptors fans could breathe a little easier. No findings from the league’s investigation should stand in the way of Kawhi’s inevitable return to the Raptors. That said, at the time of writing, there’s yet another hiccup: the league’s findings have the LA front office navigating their structure and lines of authority to get the deal signed off.
Not exactly the feel-good news Raptors Nation was hoping for. But to lift the spirits a bit amidst this turmoil, there’s also been an update about Kawhi that paints a more optimistic picture of his comeback and reinforces the stance Leonard has maintained all summer long — despite the trade weirdness.
NBA insider Jake Fischer of The Stein Line revealed in an X post on Tuesday afternoon: “Kawhi Leonard, sources say, is in Miami among an organized minicamp of Raptors players. Toronto is waiting for Los Angeles to move forward with the agreed-upon trade that Leonard and the Raptors expect to be completed.”
Kawhi Leonard joins Raptors for Miami mini-camp, fueling return buzz
Marc Stein would clarify the nature of this “minicamp” in his own X post, saying: “League sources tell @JakeLFischer and me that Kawhi Leonard joined Raptors players in Miami for the aforementioned mini-camp but to this point is restricted to individual workouts because his verbally agreed trade from the Clippers back to Toronto has not yet been made official.”
All summer long, ever since it floated around (and obviously, later confirmed) that a Kawhi return was in the works, Raptors Nation couldn’t shake the excitement and anticipation. The idea of the Klaw’s almost certain defensive synergy alongside Scottie Barnes and Collin Murray-Boyles, or even his fit with some of the lesser-highlighted pieces like RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley had everyone buzzing. But as reports suggest, his Raptors teammates might have to wait a bit longer to really get into a groove with Kawhi, since the trade’s stalled, preventing Kawhi and the Raptors from organizing team-focused workouts — as he’s not officially part of the team yet.
As I mentioned earlier in passing, that’s pretty much been the vibe all summer: Leonard and the Raptors hanging in that grey area where they’ve been linked at events like summer league, Kyle Lowry’s retirement, or even some of Kawhi’s own summer endeavors in Toronto. But these appearances were mostly just teasers about Kawhi’s true status with the Toronto Raptors — and again, we never got a firm answer this summer.
With the minicamp update, it’s another sign that the excitement around Kawhi’s expected return is trending in the right direction. That said, since he still can’t quite work alongside his Raptors teammates just yet, it only fuels more hype for Toronto’s official training camp and preseason, which runs from September 29 to October 2 in Quebec City — right after Media Day on September 28.
Is the state of this seemingly never-ending Kawhi Leonard ordeal unusual? Absolutely. But staying hopeful about things gradually sorting out, even starting with just a organized mini-camp alongside the Raptors’ team and personnel, helps us prepare for what’s next. Hopefully, we’re not too far away from Kawhi building team chemistry in an official/formal setting and eventually landing that lucrative deal to cap off his Hall of Fame career in a Raptors uniform.
