Raptors can only thank the Cavaliers for letting Scottie Barnes fall into their lap

Cleveland picking Evan Mobley opened the door to arguably Toronto's greatest draft triumph.

What a series this has shaped up to be between the Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers in Round 1.

With the odds stacked against Toronto, having begun the series at an 0-2 deficit, missing Immanuel Quickley entirely, and quiet production from key contributor Brandon Ingram — the Raptors are now riding a two-game win streak to level things out at 2-2. While the Raptors' All-Star continues to navigate around the high-stakes, pressure-filled environment of NBA playoff action, for Toronto's other All-Star and franchise talent, Scottie Barnes, that jump hasn't proven to be much of a hurdle at all.

If you saw how Barnes was operating in Game 4, you could just tell that he was a man on a mission. That intensity and fire, on both ends of the floor, was on full display to the delight of a raucous Scotiabank Arena crowd. When Scottie Barnes is in attack mode, the Raptors' edge reaches new heights.

And honestly, that has been the case now for three straight games in this series after Barnes' Game 1 showing looked like a feeler into the playoff atmosphere, and it's only turned up another dial in that time since. Games 3 and 4 have been the pinnacle, with Toronto wins to show for it, even if Game 4 proved to be a gritty path to victory.

Matched up with Cleveland for this series, there was undoubtedly going to be a key storyline and narrative to emerge, and that is the debate between Evan Mobley and Scottie Barnes.

This playoff matchup has only turbocharged the Mobley-Barnes debate

Both players were highly touted picks in the 2021 NBA Draft and have been closely linked or the subject of spirited discussions ever since. Mobley went third overall, while Barnes was selected fourth. Despite both having impactful and impressive rookie campaigns, it was ultimately the Raptors' rookie who took home the Rookie of the Year award in a close race at season's end. As a Raptors follower and commentator, I am naturally inclined to lean more toward our guy, Scottie B., but I also recognize that Evan Mobley is no slouch either.

However, as this series has progressed, it only serves to give Raptors fans more comfort and pride that they ended up with Barnes and not Mobley, given their respective performances so far.

Considering Mobley's status as a former Defensive Player of the Year and his long-standing connection to Barnes, this playoff battle carries significant implications for how Mobley is perceived in the league. Though, questions about Mobley's motor, physicality, strength, and offensive ceiling have been common themes and only gained more attention after Games 3 and 4.

That said, it's important to remember that Barnes and Mobley serve two different roles for their teams. The Raptors have Barnes as a primary scoring option (not exactly the first option, but a key contributor) and leader, while also relying on him as the backbone of their defense. Mobley, on the other hand, is surrounded by two All-Star guards and has another towering presence in Jarrett Allen in the frontcourt. Yet, the effectiveness of that pairing in this series hasn't been quite as imposing as the Cavs may have hoped.

This series just got a whole lot more juicy. The last two games have shown a stark contrast between Mobley and Barnes, and now we’ll have to wait and see what this final stretch reveals about their respective ceilings and impacts.
