Scottie Barnes will be gearing up for his first playoffs as the leader of the Toronto Raptors.

In his rookie season, he was part of a Raptors team that lost in six games to the Philadelphia 76ers. That was still very much a Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet led team. This iteration of the Raptors belongs to Scottie Barnes.

This is Scottie Barnes’ Raptors now

Toronto has missed the playoffs in three consecutive seasons. In that time, the team has undergone a full rebrand. Siakam, VanVleet, and OG Anunoby have all moved on, while Brandon Ingram, Immanuel Quickley, and RJ Barrett have stepped in to reshape the roster.

Most importantly, Barnes has become the face of the franchise, and this is the first real chance to see what his version of the Raptors looks like in the playoffs.

This is not a situation where Toronto should be expected to make a deep playoff run. It would be unfair to place that level of expectation on Barnes in his first season leading a playoff team. However, it is reasonable to expect competitive games.

Toronto’s success this season will not be measured by a championship. It will be measured by what this core shows it can build toward. It is difficult for a team to grow from a series filled with blowouts.

If Toronto loses in four or five games and gets blown out, this run will feel like a failure. If those same games are tight, with late-game swings and real pressure moments, that is where growth happens. If Toronto pushes the series deeper or even pulls off a first-round upset, that is a bonus.

This series is all about Scottie Barnes

The Raptors front office will be forced to make some difficult decisions in the offseason. Every one of those decisions will come back to one question: how do you build a championship team around Scottie Barnes?

If Barnes can show what he looks like controlling a playoff series, he will make answering that question much easier. No one else on this roster comes close to impacting the game the way he does.

Raptors fans should be watching Barnes’ aggressiveness closely. That was his biggest critique during the season. At times, he looked too comfortable letting others carry the scoring load while he focused on defense, passing, and hustle. That is a team-first approach, but it is not always what this team needs.

Barnes needs to prove he can score. He does not need to prove he can be the number one option on a championship team, but he does need to show he can score consistently enough to be a foundational piece of a championship team.

This playoff run is not about winning a championship. It is about showing Raptors fans what a Scottie Barnes led playoff team looks like.

If Barnes can prove he can be the best player in a competitive series, especially against a favoured Cavaliers team, then this run will be a success. More importantly, it will give the front office the clarity it needs heading into a critical offseason.
