My friends, I know how much of a gruelling summer it has been just lying around in wait for the Kawhi Leonard trade saga to reach a definitive end. We started the summer with a bang when the news first dropped, and while constantly on watch to hear an official announcement — it simply never came. We all watched as new layers to the league-issued investigation were revealed, and got a bit more giddy as the punishments were handed out — essentially a signal that the answer to our trade prayers was just inches aways from being answered.
Well, it took a bit more time since then to get here, seeing as the Clippers front office is operating under flux in light of their penalties and suspensions, but here we are folks. It happened.
This afternoon, ESPN’s resident NBA insider Shams Charania would finally drop the bombshell on X that Raptors Nation, and a lot of other general basketball commentators, analysts, and fans alike have been anxiously waiting for. With the starting tag line of “Done deal,” which is as definitive as it gets compared to the mixed messages we've had to interpret over the past two months, Charania confirmed that the original agreed-upon terms of the trade have moved forward from both Toronto and LA. Both sides are now set to schedule a trade call.
Kawhi Leonard is officially a Toronto Raptor once again
This monumental news comes right after Clippers owner Steve Ballmer announced he will accept and comply with the NBA’s ruling on their investigation, determined to move forward from this scandal and leave this chapter behind him and the franchise. Per NBA insider Jake Fischer on X, he went on to note that Clippers GM Trent Redden was behind leading the team’s communication with the Raptors to push the trade across the finish line.
I can only speak for myself, of course, but honestly, this feels like such a heavy weight has been lifted off our shoulders. Sure, many have been operating under the assumption that Leonard was a Toronto Raptor once again (even before it was official) and the team outlook has been assessed with Kawhi in the mix. But there was always that sliver of a chance that something could throw a nail-in-the-coffin wrench into these plans. I know the other day’s revelation about a federal investigation into the scandal definitely added to some Raptors fans' worries. Now, we can finally put this saga behind us and look to the future without being on edge.
And what does the immediate future hold for Toronto? Well, Raptors media day, training camp, and preseason are just around the corner. The key festivities that prepare us for a new season were sure to be followed closely, but even more so if they brought along the massive Kawhi question, which would’ve continued to hover over our heads like a dark cloud.
While recent reports revealed that Kawhi was training in Miami at a non-team official minicamp, now we can look forward to seeing how Leonard officially trains alongside his new teammates in Quebec City and what insights might come from it. The chemistry and fit expectations have already been buzzing despite the uncertainty, and while preseason training is just a sneak preview, it certainly paints a picture and gives an idea of how things are trending right before they grace the hardwood with real implications.
After these ground rules pass (which I’ll dive into more in a follow-up piece), the next big question for Raptors’ Kawhi Leonard trade Part Two: Electric Boogaloo is the contract extension talks he's expected to enter with Toronto. And that looming deal will likely lock him in with the franchise until the end of his Hall of Fame career.
