The Raptors have essentially accomplished step one of the proving ground process that comes with a young team transitioning back into playoff contention. Figuring out the key pieces moving forward, and they've certainly done so with franchise star Scottie Barnes at the helm, along with emerging young guns Collin Murray-Boyles, Ja'Kobe Walter, and even Jamal Shead, by his side.
While the path to get to the postseason proved to not be easy, as Toronto eerily teetered around the play-in conversation at one point, the collective efforts of Barnes and Co. were enough to get the Raptors the fifth seed and a 46-36 finish.
As we all know, they would match up against the fourth-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers in a gutsy first-round series affair, where the Raptors would fall in a hard-fought seven games. Disappointing elimination and all, there were a ton of positives to take from the postseason learning experience and regular season sample that preceeded it.
However, even with that in mind, the Raptors still bear the responsibility to avoid falling behind, as their rivals could lap them in the standings by improving while they stay stagnant. It could prove more difficult than it sounds, given that Toronto will be operating close to the luxury tax this offseason, but that doesn't mean they are completely cornered and unable to make improvements.
One of the easiest ways to do so, of course, is to explore trades.
As the latest intel report from Michael Scotto of HoopsHype details, the Toronto Raptors are widely believed to be active in summer talks, aiming to improve their roster accordingly.
Raptors could look to shop Barrett, Quickley, Poeltl in a bold effort to improve this summer
More specifically, Scotto notes some key names from the Raptors' roster who have been rumored to be shopped previously: "Overall, Toronto is expected to be active this summer, looking to improve the team. The Raptors can dangle their No. 19 pick in the draft and have had several starters in trade discussions last season, including RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, and Jakob Poeltl."
That set of players right there makes up three pieces of the Raptors' starting lineup with Barrett interchanging at the shooting guard/small forward spots, Immanuel Quickley as the point guard, while Jakob Poeltl (despite being on a massive decline) is still Toronto's most notable starting center. At the same time, that trio could just be considered the Raptors' most disposable assets in their ranks, despite their important roles.
The question is, which teams out there are going to be open to the allure of adding one or all of these names in a trade, all while sending out some form of capital to satisfy Toronto? Perhaps, given his outstanding 2026 postseason efforts, it is RJ Barrett who will lead those discussions, while the expensive Quickley and Poeltl contracts are tough burdens to sell.
It's certainly a feasible option to explore, albeit as a soul-crusher to the "Maple Mamba" faithful who want to see him succeed in his hometown, especially after the feel-good glimpses shown in the playoffs. I would certainly feel a bit hesitant to let him go, but I can also understand it from a financial standpoint, as well as questions about his long-term fit in the Barnes-led core.
With the expectation that Toronto will take some aggressive steps this summer (the recent Bobby Webster extension could also be seen as a catalyst), we could very well see a very different Raptors team next year if they manage to revamp their starting lineup by moving on from Barrett, Quickley, and Poeltl.
