Toronto Raptors Keep or Waive target No.2: Patrick McCaw

The signing of McCaw by the Raptors in January 2019 was a bit odd. McCaw was a restricted free agent belonging to the Golden State Warriors. He rejected their qualifying offer and sat on the free-agent market until December, when the Cleveland Cavaliers signed him to a partially guaranteed contract. A week later, he was waived.

After helping Toronto win the 2019 NBA title, his third consecutive NBA title, he re-signed with Toronto for two years and $8 million. He is in the final year of that contract. But here’s why his employment with the Raptors is strange. While he stands 6-7 and can defend multiple positions, he has never really stood out at any time.

Since arriving in Toronto, he has played in 66 games and none this season. He has been out all season with a knee injury. His three-point shooting is also suspect, as he shot 33.3 percent in 2019 and 32.4 percent last season. Besides not playing many games, his single-season career-high in points and minutes played came last season in 37 games with a scoring average of 4.6 points and 24.5 minutes per game.

At this stage, even though he is injured, the Raptors would do well if he is included to match salaries in a deal as the other team could waive him, or the Raptors should waive him outright. With an expiring contract at the end of this season, the $4 million price tag would not hamper the salary cap space for long.

Verdict: Waive
