Things have been getting spicy in the NBA sphere as of late.
We've seen movement all over the league. Of course, new faces have joined the NBA ranks with the 2026 NBA Draft all wrapped up. But aside from that, the trade market has been quickly heating up. Giannis Antetokounmpo is headed to Miami, the Timberwolves dumped Julius Randle and subsuquently picked up LaMelo Ball, and even the more quiet, but savvy deals sending Aaron Wiggins, Isaiah Joe, and Isaiah Stewart to new NBA homes deserve spotlight too.
That being said, June isn't even completely wrapped up yet, and we still have a full-fledged free agency period to get to and hopefully, the summer sizzler trades only continue to intensify.
Looking to our beloved Toronto Raptors, they were just thrust in some rumors for LaMelo Ball (until they lost that race), have been tabbed as Domantas Sabonis suitors once again, and perhaps most surprising of them all — recent intel linking one-time Raptors superstar Kawhi Leonard to a potential reunion.
Before we get too caught up in the nostalgia, numerous analysts have also suggested that Leonard might be using Toronto as leverage to secure what could be his final big NBA payday. But the Raptors and Bobby Webster's clear intent to "be opportunistic" this summer could just be the sign that a possible Leonard return isn't completely smoke and mirrors.
Looking at the recent edition of The Jake Fischer Latest for Marc Stein's Substack, the NBA insider provides shines a bit more light on these Leonard rumors and references some of the Raptors' likely assets that could swing a trade into motion.
An important section reads (subscription-required link here): "Toronto has shown a willingness to part with various veterans who possess substantial salaries, most notably RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley and Jakob Poeltl. Sources say that the Raptors are also working to find a new home for recent first-round pick Gradey Dick to find him a new home that provides a fresh start."
Using these rumored Raptors assets enhances the allure of a Kawhi Leonard trade
As I wrote about a few weeks ago, this core trio of Barrett, Quickley and Poeltl has already been looked at as Toronto's most likely player assets to be shopped. The same names come up once again in now a player-specific trade rumor, while the Gradey Dick mention definitely piques my interest too.
Now, be aware this is just a note on what notable assets the Raptors have shown or suggested they are open to trading, so it's not an exact trade package at present on the table for Kawhi Leonard. But in the case of Quickley and Poeltl, those are two guys who have largely been the subject of unattractive asset talks for a while now. The same thing goes for Gradey Dick, as his plummet to Raptors irrelevancy may place in him a low-quality trade appeal.
However, if we're using this chatter to generate a possible Raptors offer, these Kawhi Leonard discussions could be Toronto's best chance at offloading 'bad' assets for a key upgrade.
Yes, I fully understand that Leonard is set to turn 35, will demand a costly extension in his own right, has health issues and true commitment concerns. Still, you can't deny that a bold Kawhi return would be seen by many as that long-awaited 'big fish', win-now move to help Toronto climb the East ranks.
That would certainly beat being the team stuck with Poeltl's salary, and for as solid as he is when healthy, Quickley's obvious overpay in the grand scheme of similar NBA talent. The same thing goes for Dick if he's thrown into the deal. Though I'd bet it would take a a draft pick or two or swaps to fully get this thing on board, aside from a concrete word from Kawhi on extension talks, but nonetheless, it's an intriguing thought.
