Toronto Raptors: Stock Take, plus the roster nears full health
Patrick McCaw
Believe it or not, Patrick McCaw is actually in the midst of a career-year. Though let’s be honest, it doesn’t particularly feel like it. There aren’t many players who are more chastised by their own fanbase than McCaw. While a lot of it does seem excessive, most of McCaw’s critics are coming from a place of truth.
He’s averaging 6.3 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game, even adding 1.2 steals per game for good measure. To go even further, McCaw is actually shooting a competent 34-percent from three on 2.5 attempts per game. Considering how negative his offensive performances can be, that’s a small ray of light.
But, damn. Sometimes McCaw makes it increasingly hard to root for him. In a one-point loss against the San Antonio Spurs, McCaw was a -18 in 19 minutes of action. It’s not the be-all to end all, nor am I suggesting that McCaw is solely responsible for the loss, but it’s telling to say the least.
There’s potential there, but realistically, just how much?
Nick Nurse seems to value McCaw’s involvement in the game. When he’s on his game, he can be smart and active on defense. Even on offense, he’s showing signs of being a little more aggressive, not passing up on open threes and attacking the rim on cuts.
But this week showed signs that there’s still a long way to go before McCaw is the guy the Raptors need.
VERDICT: STOCK DOWN
